REFLECTIONS TODAY
The paradoxical power of the Beatitudes comes from Jesus who suffered and died but has been exalted in glory. The satisfaction or happiness coming from the conventional standards of the world are “paltry” compared to the boundless joy that God prepares for those who live the mystery of Christ. Those who have embraced the “mind of Christ” rejoice in their affliction, for they understand that “the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us” (Rom 8:18).
Today we honor all the saints. They are the great array of our brothers and sisters who now give God eternal praise. They surely include people who were known and dear to us when they still lived on this earth. We believe that they are united with us even more intimately. We believe in their concern for our salvation. They have also left us examples of a good life so that when the time comes for us to depart from this world, they will welcome us in their company.
GOSPEL • MATTHEW 5:1-12a
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”
