Why CHED Chairman De Vera did not run for senator in 2022 elections

Citing the importance of health and family, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Popoy De Vera decided not to run for senator in the upcoming 2022 elections.

In a Facebook post dated Oct. 8, De Vera revealed that various sectors have urged him to join the senatorial race in next year’s elections.

However, he noted that “after thorough consideration and discussion with my family, I have decided not to run for senator this upcoming election.”

De Vera said that the pandemic and his personal experience with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection “made me take a step back and realize that family and health are paramount.”

In a separate Facebook post dated Oct. 9, De Vera announced that he got a COVID-19 negative result after 14 days of mandatory quarantine.

“It was a difficult 14 days which made me reflect and realize the importance of family and health,” De Vera said.

As he shelved his political plans, De Vera thanked all of those in the local governments, educational community, and friends “who personally pledged their support as they urged me to run as the education champion who will protect the gains achieved in free higher education and advocate for educational reforms.”

De Vera said he is honored for their support and he sincerely appreciated their confidence. However, he believed there will be “difficult challenges in mounting an effective political campaign as we continue to battle COVID-19.”

Meanwhile, De Vera said that he will use the remaining months of his term as CHED Chairman to “ensure the continuing implementation of flexible learning and the successful transition to face to face classes.”

De Vera also vowed that he will push for “prompt and full vaccination of all education stakeholders” -- particularly the students -- as their “health and safety remain my priority.”

Moreover, De Vera said that he will also “aggressively promote education as an election issue and will support candidates with the a track record on education reform.”
