Ressa's Nobel Peace Prize also a win vs 'fake news' -- Pangilinan

Senator Francis Pangilinan on Saturday, October 9, said that Maria Ressa winning the Nobel Peace Prize is also a victory against disinformation and social media trolls.

The opposition lawmaker said Ressa's historic Nobel Peace award proves that Filipinas are world-class.

"World-class sa pagsabi ng katotohanan, world-class sa tapang. Napakalaking karangalan para lahat ng Pilipino ang makamit ang kauna-unahang Nobel Peace Prize ng isang Pilipino (World-class in truth telling, world-class in being brave. This is a huge honor for all Filipinos to have a Filipina receive the country's Nobel Peace Prize)," Pangilinan said in a statement.

"Hindi lang ito historic, panalo rin ito laban sa mga gumagawa ng fake news (This is not only historic, this is also a victory against peddlers of fake news)," he added.

He said that just like members of the opposition, Ressa has also been "trolled" or attacked in social media for doing her job.

"Maria has made journalism synonymous with courage -- raising relevant issues like the weaponization of social media and speaking truth to power like Mark Zuckerberg in Facebook's role in manipulating public perception," Pangilinan said.

"Ang paninindigan at tapang niya ang kailangan natin sa panahong ito. Napaka-inspiring. Congratulations to truth-telling! Congratulations Maria!" he told Ressa.
