Comelec to screen filed COCs before releasing official list of candidates for 2022 polls

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said that it will review all the filed certificates of candidacy (COC) before they would come up with the official list of candidates for the May 2022 national and local elections.

Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said that 97 aspirants filed their COCs for president, 28 aspirants for vice president, and 175 for senators.

Jimenez said that they need to review the COCs of these aspirants to determine if they are fit to officially run for next year's general polls.

"Meron tayong iba-ibang kategorya ng nuisance candidate. Una, nag-file para lamang gawing katatawanan yung sistema. Pangalawa, yung nag-file para mag-create ng confusion dahil magkapareho sila ng pangalan ng isang mas tanyag na kandidato. Pangatlo, yun naman yung walang lehitimong intensyon na tumakbo para sa elective office na pin-file-an niya (We have different categories of nuisance candidates. First, those who filed just to make fun of the system. Second, those who filed to create confusion because they have the same name of a more popular candidate. Third, an aspirant who has no legitimate intention to run for the elective office that he filed)," Jimenez said in an interview with ABS-CBN's Teleradyo on Saturday, Oct. 9.

"Marami tayong iba't-ibang paraan upang makita kung meron talagang legitimate intent to run o bonafide...kasama na dyan yung campaign strategy, yung kanyang mga plataporma and other things (We have various ways to see if there is really a legitimate intent to run or bonafide... that includes the campaign strategy, his platforms, and other things)," he added.

Jimenez said they are expecting to release the final list of candidates by the end of this year.

"Mapa-finalize list ng candidates natin baka December pa (Our list of candidates may be finalized by December),” he said.
