Phivolcs: Magnitude 5.2 quake hits Batangas

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has detected a 5.2-magnitude earthquake in Batangas in the early hours of Friday, Oct. 8.

It said the tremor was an aftershock of the 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Calatagan, Batangas on July 24, 2021.

In a bulletin on Friday, Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the 5.2-magnitude earthquake at 19 kilometers (km) northwest of Calatagan, Batangas at around 2:14 a.m.

The earthquake was slightly felt at Intensity II in Calatagan.

Phivolcs' instruments also measured the tremor at Intensity II in Calapan City, and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Makati City; and Olongapo City; and Intensity I in Batangas City, and Calatagan, Batangas; Tagaytay City, Cavite; Plaridel, Bulacan; and Marikina City.

It noted that the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means the tremor was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, Phivolcs does not expect damage to property or aftershocks due to this earthquake.

The 6.6-magnitude mainshock that occurred on July 24 was caused by the movement along the Manila Trench--an earthquake generator located offshore west of Luzon Island, roughly parallel to the Philippine archipelago in the north but veers very close to land at the southern tip of Occidental Mindoro.
