Mapúa to offer PhD program focused on nanotech research in November

Mapúa University will be offering next month a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Materials Science Program with specialization in Nanotechnology (by Research) in a bid to increase the pool of nanotechnology experts in the country.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said a pioneering program focused on nanotechnology research will soon be available at the Yuchengco-led university following the signing of a memorandum of agreement between the DOST and Mapúa University on Oct. 5.

The MOA is aimed at formalizing the partnership in offering the graduate program.

“The said agreement seeks to develop expertise in materials science with focus on nanotechnology and increase the pool of nanotechnology experts in the country,” the DOST chief said during his weekly report on Friday, Oct. 8.

He said the Mapúa University will confer the degree and will start the program in November this year.

"Successful applicants will receive scholarships from the Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI). They will be allowed to conduct their researches at the DOST-Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) and access the Institute’s nanotechnology, ADMATEL (Advanced Device and Materials Testing Laboratory) and other laboratories in the conduct of their research activities,” de la Peña said.

He said experts from DOST-ITDI will act as advisers or co-advisers of the graduate students endorsed by the university.

“Focus of the graduate researches will be on biomedical applications, human security, and nutraceuticals, which are among the priorities in the Harmonized National R&D Agenda.”
