Adele on motherhood, divorce, and anxiety

Her six-year-old son told her, "I can't see you."

Out on the cover of this month's Vogue and British Vogue is singer Adele in a wrap dress with billowy skirt in bright emerald hue. The cover story talked about her life the past year, which she referred to as the "Year of Anxiety."

It has been tough as she went through separation and a divorce settlement that went "as smoothly as a divorce can." Like any parent, Adele couldn't bear the pain that her son Angelo was going through. At six and a half years old, "He said to my face, 'Can you see me?' And I was like, 'Uh, yeah.' And he was like, 'Cause I can’t see you.' Well, my whole life fell apart in that moment. He knew I wasn’t there.”

This pushed her to have regular conversations with her son. She even wrote a song for him after the initial conversation mentioned in the earlier paragraph. She, unexpectedly, dedicated this album to her son. It became a "love letter" for him for when he old enough to understand a little bit more.

"He has so many simple questions for me that I can’t answer, because I don’t know the answer. Like, 'Why can’t we still live together?' That’s just not what people do when they get divorced. 'But why not?' I’m like, 'I don’t know. That’s not what society does.' And 'Why don’t you love my dad anymore?' And I’d be like, 'I do love your dad. I’m just not in love.' I can’t make that make sense to a nine-year-old.”
