Kontra Daya calls for thorough probe on emergency alert misuse

Kontra Daya has called for a thorough investigation on the emergency alert messages sent to several mobile phone users on Oct. 6, the day when former senator Bongbong Marcos filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for president.

The poll watchdog group asked the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to conduct the probe.

"There is a need to know who is responsible, what kind of technology was used, and why this is available to certain nefarious characters," Kontra Daya said in a statement.

"The Comelec should conduct a thorough investigation. Marcos and his supporters should be held accountable for what they have done. Despite their denial, they are the beneficiaries," added the group.

Kontra Daya said the incident should be investigated to avoid a repeat of such scheme.

"If the incident goes unchecked, this could be repeated on a grander scale from now until election day. This is not just intrusive to mobile phone users, but also offensive to those who want clean and transparent elections," the group said.

"The advancements in technology make it convenient for those with vested interests to control ubiquitous personal belongings... these messages might be a preview on the tactics to be used during this election season," it added.
