PDL-made handicrafts sold online praised abroad

Handicrafts made by inmates inside the jail facilities under the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Sorsogon and Davao City are gaining worldwide acceptance.

Aside from Hawaii and other parts of the United States, the handicrafts are also being sold in other parts of the world via online selling, according to BJMP spokesperson Chief Insp. Xavier Solda.

“The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic taught us to be more creative and proactive in pushing for reform programs to ensure that the PDLs (Persons Deprived of Liberty) under our care is productive while they are with us,” said Solda.

He said this is part of the BJMP's program in promoting livelihood projects that will make the PDLs under its care to be productive in preparation for their possible re-integration in the society.

Aside from programs on education, Solda noted that “we also provide them different livelihood opportunities.”

Solda added that BJMP under the leadership of Director Allan Iral aims not only to ensure the safety of the PDLs from the virus but also to provide them with the support in the hope of making them stand on their feet and gain the appropriate strength to face future challenges upon their release.
