Labor leader files COC for president

A labor leader is running for president in the May 2022 polls.

Leody De Guzman filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for president on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Sofitel Tent in Pasay City.

He said he is running for the highest post in the land because he feels that people are already tired of electing candidates who do not perform after being elected.

"Ramdam ko marami na mga tao na nauumay na sa pagboto sa mga sikat at mga bilyonaryong kandidato na wala namang nagagawa pagkatapos eleksyon. Papasayahin lang ang botante sa panahon ng kampanya pero pagkatapos ng eleksyon, hindi na pinapansin ang mga taong bumoto sa kanila.(I feel like there are a lot of people who are tired of voting for famous and billionaire candidates who do nothing after the election. The voter will only be made happy during the campaign but after the election the people who voted for them are ignored)," said De Guzman.

The socialist political party Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM) on Sept. 29 nominated De Guzman to run for president in the 2022 elections.

De Guzman previously ran as senator in 2019 under PLM and the Labor Win Coalition with a platform for abolishing contractualization, ensuring living wages and decent jobs, and defending human rights.

In a statement, PLM bared that its unprecedented push to field a candidate for president emanated from the growing disappointment with the present candidates and potential candidates, who they claim represent nothing more than the same elitist and anti-worker interests that have characterized all previous administrations.

PLM also underscored the need to forward a new electoral framework for progressives, one that no longer relies on tailing and allying with elite politicians to gain marginal victories in elections.
