Landslides, flooding hit Visayas due to TD 'Lannie'


Tropical depression (TD) "Lannie" dumped heavy rains in Western and Eastern Visayas which resulted in landslides and flooding incidents, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Tuesday, Oct. 5.

In a situational report, the NDRRMC said a "minor" landslide occured in Brgy. Mapgap, Tomas Oppus, Southern Leyte in Eastern Visayas (Region 8) on Monday due to heavy downpour.

Disaster response teams were deployed in the area to conduct clearing operations while authorities have yet to confirm if there was any casualty.

Another landslide was reported by local officials in Brgy. Jaclupan, Talisay, Cebu which affected at least three houses. The NDRRMC was validating the report.

Meanwhile, at least five areas in Western Visayas (Region 6) were flooded due to heavy rains. These were reported in Brgys. Jagnaya, Agcagay, Caridad, Pangabuan, and Guintas in Jamindan, Capiz.

The affected areas were residential communities and ricefields and as of posting time, the NDRRMC said flood has not yet subsided.

In Brgy. Cubay, Iloilo City, a tree was uprooted by strong winds which fell down on three residential houses. No one got hurt in the incident.

Meanwhile, 221 passengers were stranded in various seaports in Calabarzon (Region 4-A), Mimaropa (Region 4-B), Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas as sea travels were cancelled due to the inclement weather.
