'Badjao Girl' explains viral Miss Universe post

"Badjao Girl" Rita Gaviola is aware that her recent post about joining Miss Universe Philippines has received different reactions.

In a recent interview with DJ Jai Ho for an episode of “Hotspot,” the 18-year-old aspiring beauty queen explained her statement.

She shared: “Nag-post po kasi ako tapos nag-caption ako na sasali na tayo sa Miss U. Kasi gusto ko din naman po. Dream ko din naman 'yung ganun. Kasi dati talaga, before ako mag-viral, gusto ko makapagsuot ako ng gown. Sabi ko sa sarili ko at sa kaibigan ko, one day makakapagsuot ako ng ganito. Hindi man sa ngayon pero soon talaga."

“Naisipan kong i-post 'yun kasi maraming nagtatanong sa akin, ‘Bakit hindi mo i-try? Mag-join ka sa mga pageant, ganyan, kasi bagay 'yung mukha mo,’” she added.

Rita admitted she is hesitant, thinking she is not yet ready to do so.

In fact, she noted how the mere idea of speaking in straight English scares her.

Despite this, the Kapamilya actress posted her interest to join the pageant hoping to gauge how people will feel about it.

“Sabi ko i-try ko i-caption ito tapos tignan lang kung anong magiging reaction nila. Tapos nung pinost ko, nagulat akong maraming nag-comment. May mga negative, hindi mo naman maiiwasan 'yung negative... Nagulat ako na meron din namang mga positive. Meron akong nabasa doon na ‘Bakit hindi mo i-try sumali sa mga barangay barangay?’”

“Ako naman po, siyempre kinakabahan ako… Pero may mga bagay pang kailangan kong i-train 'yung sarili ko. Hindi kasi ito parang (laro) lang. Kumbaga kailangan mo maghanda para kapag sumalang ka, ready ka na at may confidence ka na sa sarili mo. Kailangan mo ng mahabang training para sa ganyan.”

For now, she would just focus on her studies.

"Kasi 'yun ang mahalaga talaga.”
