Sultan a 'strong, experienced' fighter, says unbeaten Puerto Rican foe

Puerto Rican boxer Carlos Caraballo will put his unbeaten record at stake when he faces former world title challenger Jonas Sultan in a 10-rounder bantamweight bout on October 30 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Caraballo is looking to add another highlight-reel victory in his impressive record against Sultan after winning all his 14 bouts through knockouts.

But the 25-year-old Caraballo isn't about to underestimate Sultan, who is currently training with long-time IBF super-flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas at the Wild Card Gym with legendary coach Freddie Roach and trainer Joven Jimenez.

"I am thankful for the opportunity that my promoter, Miguel Cotto Promotions, is giving me together with Top Rank to fight at Madison Square Garden. I will take this opportunity to look great and continue to make noise at 118 pounds as I aspire to win a world title," said Caraballo, who is being promoted by compatriot and boxing great Miguel Cotto.

"Sultan is a strong, experienced opponent. I know he has fought the big names, but I am working hard with my team to show I am a force to be reckoned with. This victory is for my people from Guayanilla, and all Puerto Ricans in New York."

Caraballo last saw action in March this year, scoring a technical KO win over Leonardo Baez of Mexico for his 14th straight win since September 2016.

Sultan, for his part, knocked out American opponent Sharone Carter last August.

The Zamboanga del Norte native pugilist, who holds a 17-5 record on top of 11 KOs, opted to stay in the United States and continue training instead of going home.

He has begun sparring sessions with Ancajas. Both boxers are under the tutelage of MP (Manny Pacquiao) Promotions.

It would be recalled Sultan challenged Ancajas for the IBF title but the latter emerged victorious via unanimous decision and successfully defended his belt for the fifth straight time in May 2018.
