PH Red Cross alerts local chapters to prepare for TD 'Lannie'

Local chapters of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) were directed to stay alert and ready to respond to any disturbance brought by Tropical Depression (TD) “Lannie.”

PRC chapters, especially those in the Visayas region, were instructed to send updates to the Red Cross Operations Center regularly.

The PRC said that as “Lannie” is forecasted to remain within the tropical depression category, with a possibility of slight intensification once over the Sulu Sea or the West Philippine Sea, chapters are already on stand-by --- with teams ready to be deployed to affected areas.

“Communities should be aware of the 4 Ps - Predict, plan, prepare and practice. Ganito ang paghahanda namin sa Red Cross (This is how we prepared at Red Cross), we predict what could happen, after we gather the facts and weather reports, saan ba ito tatama at kung gaano kalakas (where will it land and how strong it will be),” said PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Senator Richard Gordon.

“We plan and prepare based on our worst-case scenarios. It’s better to be overly prepared than to be inadequate,” Gordon said. “And always practice so everyone in the community develops that instinct and will know what to do during these situations,” he added.

PRC said that it is also strengthening its disaster management services through its local chapters. “All rescue vehicles, logistic hubs, and emergency response units are ready for situations like this,” it added.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), in its 5 p.m. tropical cyclone bulletin, said that there are 14 areas under Signal No. 1. TD “Lannie” is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Oct. 7.
