Floating flower garden in Tokyo uses 13,000 live orchids and modern technology to make magic happen

Tokyo-based “ultra-technologists” teamLab created a new artwork installation called “Floating Flower Garden; Flowers and I are of the Same Root, the Garden and I are One” where visitors can enjoy an immersive installation that marks a departure for the world-renowned collective.

Although teamLab is known for mixing technology with art through interactive LEDs, projections, and soundscapes, their newest installation uses the real thing.

Unveiled during the summer, the installation is made up of over 13,000 living orchids that are suspended from the ceiling. The flowers grow along near-invisible wires to give the impression that they’re floating in mid-air.

Once visitors approach the curtain of orchids, they will trigger sensors that will prompt the flowers to slowly rise to allow them to enter the space before descending again behind the visitors.

Members of the teamLab collective all agreed that orchids were perfect for the exhibition since they can grow without soil and symbolize resilience and adaptability which the art collective hopes to explore through their works.

The art installation will be on show until the end of 2022 at teamLab planets, a museum in Tokyo that features nine absorbing works that encourage visitors to immerse themselves in the art.
