DFA mourns death of veteran photojournalist Recto Mercene

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), through its Office of the Public and Cultural Diplomacy (OPCD) has conveyed its "deepest condolences" to the family and friends of veteran photojournalist Recto Mercene who passed away on Saturday, Oct. 2.

Mercene was one of the "most highly regarded and well-respected" members of the DFA Press Corps.

"As a photojournalist, Recto told the story of our country's history as he captured, with courage, skill and artistry, some of its most pivotal moments," the OPCD said in a statement late Sunday, Oct. 3.

"The DFA-OPCD takes pride in having worked with a veteran photojournalist who remained humble, sincere and professional--a fair and good friend to those who became the Department's spokespersons and to the Department as a whole," the OPCD added.

The department also conveyed that it "will forever treasure his partnership and friendship throughout the years."

"We pray that his family and loved ones find comfort and strength in this time of mourning," the agency said.

Mercene was known for capturing the iconic photo of Ninoy Aquino lying lifeless on the tarmac on the day of his assassination at the Manila International Airport on Aug. 21,1983.

The seasoned lensman was an air traffic controller and private pilot for 18 years before becoming a journalist.
