DepEd hopes to inspire the student-athletes amidst the pandemic

Despite mobility restrictions and other limitations due to the ongoing health situation in the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) expressed hope that student-athletes will remain inspired and motivated.

To inspire learners and student-athletes amidst the pandemic, the Bureau of Learner Support Services’ School Sports Division (BLSS-SSD) and Youth Formation Division (YFD) under the Administration strand of Undersecretary Alain Del B. Pascua collaborated for the “Pinoy Sports Heroes” project.

“Speaking of world-class athletes, with the recent accomplishments of our country's delegates to the Tokyo Summer Olympics, particularly the medalists who made history and gave the Philippines its best Olympic showing ever,” Pascua said.

“The youth for sure would be inspired with their experiences and stories, from their humble beginnings to their success in their respective sports,” he added.

The “Pinoy Sports Heroes: The Ultimate Balik-Eskwela Pinoy Sports Con” project featured Tokyo 2020 medalists Hidilyn Diaz, Nesthy Petecio, and other members of the Olympic delegation.

Through a virtual sportscon, the athletes provided inspiration to aspiring student-athletes.

Diaz, the first-ever Filipino Olympic gold medalist, imparted how sports changed her life while encouraging learners to continue pursuing their dreams.

While they might be experiencing difficult times, Diaz urged the students to “learn to adopt.”

Diaz, who is also a student, said that she is also having difficulties in the current learning set-up. “But I’m not giving up because I want to have a degree. Someday or next year, I hope I will have a degree already,” she said in a mix of English and Filipino.

Meanwhile, Diaz urged students not to give up on their dreams. “We really have to be consistent in what we do and obey your teachers because they know what is right,” she said.

“Then, surround yourself with people that will help you, those who have good influence on you trust God, trust in yourself and trust the people behind you,” she added.

Meanwhile, being the first-ever female Olympic medalist in boxing in Philippine history, Petecio stated that this 2020 Olympic stint gave her a chance to prove herself to everyone that she could be on the podium through hard work. “I feel so blessed that I was given a chance by the Lord to show what I can do,” she said.

Other boxing Olympic medalists Carlo Paalam and Eumir Marcial, finalist Carlos Edriel Yulo (Gymnastics), Margielyn Didal (Skateboarding), and EJ Obiena (Pole Vault), and Paralympic swimmer Gary Bejino also revealed the journey of their respective careers.
