PH Red Cross urges public to donate blood to save lives

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) on Sunday, Oct. 31, encourages everyone to give blood and help save lives.

By donating blood, the humanitarian organization said that one can potentially save up to four lives, and improve the health and quality of life of many patients.

It noted that the donated blood can help cancer patients and those with specific blood diseases, surgical needs, obstetrics, and patients with heart, liver, and kidney problems.

Moreover, blood donations can be given to trauma and road accident victims.

“Blood is a true humanitarian gift that can only be given by one human being to another,” PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Senator Richard J. Gordon said in a statement.

The PRC, which has over 99 blood facilities to date across the country, provides 50 percent of blood needs in the country, it said.

For blood inquiries, people can contact the National Blood Center located at the PRC Tower along EDSA corner Boni Avenue in Mandaluyong City through (02) 790-2330; (02) 790-2382; (02) 790-2383 or the PRC Chapter nearest you.

For urgent requests, the PRC advised the public to call their hotline 143.

Meanwhile, the PRC said that its ambulance services have now given free emergency medical care to 4,556 individuals from January to October this year alone.

Some 2,362 people were also provided with free ambulance transport services in the same period, it added.

To date, the PRC currently has over 170 ambulance units spread across its 104 chapters nationwide.

“The Philippine Red Cross Emergency Medical Services, the one handling our ambulance services, is always ready to be dispatched when needed,” Gordon said.

“Ang services ng ambulansiya, kasama ng mga highly trained ambulance personnel natin ay libre para sa mga mahihirap o indigent kababayan natin (Our ambulance services, along with our highly trained ambulance personnel, are free for poor or indigent citizens),” he added.
