Pasig halts San Juan's streak; Surigao upsets Paralympics in PCAP

Pasig City dealt San Juan its first loss in the third conference of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online chess tournament with a 15.5-5.5 victory Saturday.

Sherily Cua, Rudy Ibañez, Kevin Arquero and Eric Labog Jr. provided two wins apiece for the Pasig City King Pirates as they downed the San Juan Predators in blitz, 5.5-1.5, and rapid, 10-4.

Pasig followed it up with a 13.5-7.5 triumph over Laguna to forge a three-way tie on top of the North Division leaderboard with similar 14-1 cards along with Caloocan and San Juan.

San Juan, for its part, saw its 13-game winning streak halted but quickly bounced back with a 17-4 victory over Manila.

Trailing the three leaders were Laguna (12-3), Manila (11-4), Isabela (9-6), Rizal (6-9), Davao (5-10), Bangkok (4-11), Pampanga (4-11), Olongapo (3-12) and Pengcheng (0-15).

Meanwhile, Surigao pulled off a 2-1 Armageddon playoff victory over pacesetter Team Paralympics in the Southern Division.

National Master Jonathan Tan and Lennon Hart Salgados downed FIDE Master Sander Severino and NM Menandro Redor to power the Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates to their third victory.

Team Paralympics first dominated the blitz event, 4.5-2.5, but Surigao retaliated with an 8-6 win in the rapid to end the regulation at 10.5-all and force a playoff.

Surigao, however, failed to sustain that momentum in its second match and lost to Iloilo, 13.5-7.5, for a 3-12 mark.

Team Paralympics, for its part, rose to a 13.5-7.5 win over Palawan to remain at the helm with a 12-3 record.

Trailing behind Team Paralympics were Iloilo (11-4), Penang (10-5), Singapore (9-6), Toledo (9-6), Camarines (8-7), Negros (8-7), Lapu-Lapu (7-8), Mindoro (3-12), Palawan (3-12) and Sunrays (1-13).
