ASEAN Para Games cancelled

The 11th ASEAN Para Games has been cancelled after host Vietnam decided to focus on staging the rescheduled 31st Southeast Asian Games in May 2022.

Vietnamese online newspaper VnExpress disclosed this, adding that the pandemic developments in Vietnam and other participating countries has caused complications in staging this event.

This would be the second time that the ASEAN Para Games is cancelled. Host Philippines has cancelled the meet in 2019 also due to the pandemic, as well as financial and logistical restraints.

The Vietnam ASEAN Para Games was originally set Dec. 17 to 23 this year, but has been hampered due to the pandemic.

Meanwhile, host Vietnam confirmed that the 31st Southeast Asian Games will push through in May 2022.

Although no specific dates have been set yet, Tolentino said Vietnam SEAG Organizing Committee (VIESGOC) Deputy Chairman Tran Duc Phan made the confirmation in a letter to SEAG Federation COO Dato Seri Chaiyapak Seriwak of Thailand dated Oct. 28.

Copies of the letter were provided to the federation members.

The VIESGOC has adjusted the Games master plan, schedules, time lines ... and reported to the Vietnamese government for approval,” Phan, also the SEAGF vice president, wrote. “As you know, the SEAGF meeting held on October 18, we informed you that the 31st SEA Games will be held in the middle of May 2022.”

With the development, training plans for national athletes have also resumed.

“This is the bell for all national sports associations involved and the Philippine Sports Commission to buckle down to work,” Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Bambol Tolentino said.

The POC earlier pegged a delegation of 626 athletes who will compete in 29 of the 30 sports in the Vietnam Games program.

Tolentino has also batted for a P200-million budget from the 2022 general appropriations for the SEA Games preparation and competition.
