PAGASA: LPA off Surigao del Sur may develop into tropical depression within 48 hours

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is closely monitoring a low pressure area (LPA) east of Surigao del Sur as it may develop into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours.

In its 4 p.m. weather bulletin on Sunday, Oct. 3, PAGASA said the LPA was estimated at 185 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur at around 3 p.m.

"Due to favorable conditions, the LPA is likely to develop into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours," PAGASA said.

The country's next tropical cyclone will be named "Lannie."

Based on the PAGASA's latest forecast, weather specialist Meno Mendoza said the potential cyclone may traverse Mindanao and Visayas in the coming days.

In the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms may prevail over Eastern and Central Visayas and Mindanao due to the LPA that is embedded along the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

"Under these conditions, isolated flash flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA warned.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain showers due to the ITCZ and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA also advised those in these areas to take precautions against possible flash floods or landslides especially during the occurrence of severe thunderstorms, which are often accompanied by short-lived heavy rains.
