5.3-magnitude quake hits Occidental Mindoro

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) detected a magnitude 5.3 earthquake in Occidental Mindoro on Sunday morning, Oct. 3.

The epicenter of the quake that hit at 5:59 a.m. was traced at 5 kilometers (km) northeast of Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro.

It was initially measured at magnitude 5.6 but Phivolcs later revised it to magnitude 5.3.

Phivolcs said the quake was strongly felt at Intensity V in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro.

It was "weak" at Intensity III in Santa Cruz, Occidental Mindoro, while it was "slightly felt" at Intensity II in Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro and Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro.

Phivolcs' instruments also measured the tremor at Intensity III in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Intensity II in Batangas City; and Intensity I in Mulanay and Mauban in Quezon province and Tagaytay City in Cavite.

It warned that aftershocks are likely to occur due to this earthquake.

On Sept. 27, Phivolcs recorded a 5.7-magnitude quake that also struck Occidental Mindoro and was felt in nearby areas, including Metro Manila.

Its epicenter was at 16 km northeast of Looc, Occidental Mindoro.

Phivolcs said the magnitude 5.7 tremor was generated by the subduction of the Manila Trench--a major earthquake generator located offshore west of Luzon island, which is roughly parallel to the Philippine archipelago and is running from Taiwan to Occidental Mindoro.
