Newly-hired national women’s football coach Alen Stajcic believes his team can secure of the five World Cup slots that will be contested in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in January.
The Philippines was put in a tough Group B composed of Australia, Thailand and Indonesia but Stajcic is confident a historic berth in the World Cup can be achieved if preparations leading up to the competitions in India go well.
“We’re very confident. We got a good team,” Stajcic said shortly after the Asian Cup draw held Thursday, Oct. 28. “This team in the last 3-4 years and in the last Asian Cup they showed that they can compete with all the countries in the world and played a playoff against South Korea.
“If we can keep improving and working hard in two or three months, I’m very confident that we can seal one of those berths in the World Cup,” added the Australian mentor.
The hiring of Stajcic, who steered Australia to two World Cup appearances and a quarterfinal stint in the 2016 Rio Olympics, is seen as a good boost for the Pinay booters, who are in the Asian Cup for the second straight time.
The Philippines fell a win short of advancing to the World Cup during the 2018 Asian Cup, losing a playoff.
For the 2022 event, the ladies will need to secure one of the two best third place finishes to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Spots in the World Cup or the inter-confederation playoffs will depend on the performance of Australia, which is assured of a berth in the 2023 event as co-host with neighboring New Zealand.
Australia and Thailand will pose a difficult challenge for the Philippines in the group stage.
The Philippines last faced Australia in the 2008 AFF Championship, losing 7-0 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Thailand is 12-0 against the Philippines, including the last four in the last five years. Their last meeting was in the 2019 AFF Championship when the Thais prevailed, 4-2.
The Filipinas have not faced Indonesia since the 2018 AFF tourney when they sneaked out a 3-3 draw following a late goal from Eva Madarang.
“I know Australia would somehow fall in our group,” said Stajcic. “It’s an interesting tournament and it’s gonna present different challenges for different teams and an extra match as well.
“The good part for us is that we know who we gonna play and be focus on targeting that first match and making sure we’re ready to get when we get to India.”
