Comelec eyes holding of 6 debates in May 2022 polls

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is eyeing to hold six debates in the May 2022 polls.

Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said they are planning to hold three debates both for president and vice president.

"We are looking to have essentially six debates: three for president and three for vice president," he said in a television interview Thursday, Oct. 28.

"We have three presidential debates as a general rule. Last elections we had one vice presidential debate. This time we are hoping to expand the nunber of vice presidential debates seeing how the vice president is elected independently of the president," added Jimenez.

He also revealed that the candidates will be debating in person while the audience will be virtual.

"It will be face to face among candidates...candidates will be in the same place, will be debating in person but the audience will be virtual," Jimenez said.

During the May 2016 polls, the Comelec together with their media partners organized three presidential debates dubbed as #PiliPinasDebates2016.

Due to the successful conduct of the debates, then Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista said they want to make the debates a regular thing during elections.

"We want to make these debates a part of the fabric of Philippine elections that can successfully penetrate the political consciousness of many Filipinos for it is high time that our politics to veer away from popularity and personalities and move towards policy pronouncements, platforms, and performance,” he said at that time.
