Yulo to receive incentives for winning gold, silver at world championships

Carlos Yulo stands to receive another financial windfall for his successful campaign at the 50th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan over the weekend.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Board is expected to convene as soon as possible to determine the exact amount of incentive that Yulo will receive for winning one gold and one silver medal at the said world event.

“We will wait for the report of GAP (Gymnastics Association of the Philippines) through Cynthia Carrion, but we will revisit the previous incentives,” said PSC Executive Director Atty. Guillermo Iroy.

Under Republic Act 10699 or the “Sports Benefits and Incentives Act of 2001”, financial bonuses of P1 million (gold medal) and P500,000 (silver) are given to athletes who won in world championship-level events held every two years with at least 45 countries participating.

The FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, however, is being held every year, with the next editions slated in Liverpool, Great Britain in 2022 and Antwerp, Belgium in 2023.

At the 2019 edition in Stuttgart, Germany where Yulo won the floor exercise gold, the 21-year-old gymnast received P1 million bonus – P500,000 for winning the gold medal and P500,000 for qualifying to the Tokyo Olympics.

At the 2018 edition in Doha, Qatar where he won bronze in the floor exercise, he received P250,000.
