P3.4-M 'shabu' seized from mayoralty bet in Cotabato op

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) arrested a mayoralty candidate who allegedly yielded P3.4 million worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) in an anti-illegal drug operation in Midsayap, Cotabato on Thursday night, Oct. 21.

The PDEA identified the suspect as Tom Nandang, also known as Datukon Nandang, 33, who was collared inside his residence in Barangay Upper Glad 1 at 6:00 p.m.

Nandang is running for mayor in Northern Kabuntalan, Maguindanao in the upcoming May 2022 elections.

Concerned authorities have yet to disclose what will happen to the candidacy of the suspect, who apparently was included in the drugs watch list of the PDEA.

PDEA said that joint operatives served a search warrant against Nandang where they confiscated 10 sachets of suspected shabu weighing around 500 grams and a caliber .45 pistol from the suspect.

Accordingly, the illegal drugs were stuffed inside a green Chinese tea bag cellophane with label "Guanyingwang" and have a street value of P3.4 million.

Nandang is facing charges for violation of Republic Act (RA) 9165 or Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and RA 10591 or Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

The operation was carried out by the PDEA Cotabato Provincial Office, PDEA Bangsamoro Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Midsayap Municipal Police Station (MPS), and 34th Infantry Battallion (IB) of the Philippine Army (PA).
