Panay power distributors assured damaged submarine cable will be repaired

ILOILO CITY— The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has assured power distributors in Panay Island that preparatory works are underway for the repair of the damaged submarine cable that transmits power across the Visayan island.

“The problem is being addressed. But since it is a submarine cable and it is underwater, the process is more complicated,” said Michelle Visera, NGCP Western Visayas regional corporate communications officer.

This is after NGCP recently led a team to conduct underwater inspection of the 138 kilovolt (138 kV) submarine cable in Amlan town, Negros Oriental.

To recall, the submarine cable that transmits power was damaged by a contractor of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) that was conducting dredging along a river last June.

Due to the incident, power transmission has been cut by half along the grid connecting the islands of Negros and Panay. From 180 megawatts (180 MWs), only 90 MWs can be transmitted. Thus, affecting the power being purchased by distributors from power generators.

The underwater inspection of NGCP’s manufacturer will determine the nature and extent of the damage before actual repair starts, which will involve diving, crane lifting and testing activities and the use of specialized equipment.

The NGCP has earlier announced that the target to finish the repair will be done by February 2022.

“But the finishing of the repair will be subject to the findings,” added Visera.
