Laguna stays undefeated in PCAP

Laguna bested Team Paralympic, 12-9, for its ninth straight win in the third conference of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament Wednesday.

Grandmaster Banjo Barcenilla powered the Laguna Heroes with victories in the blitz and rapid duels against Asian Para Games gold medalist and FIDE Master Sander Severino in Board 1 to keep their record immaculate.

Laguna was actually trailing 4-3 after the blitz event but went on to dominate the rapid, 9-5, highlighted by Barcenilla’s 22-move victory over Severino in a Double Fianchetto Opening.

Vince Angelo Medina and Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo also stepped up for Laguna in the rapid event, with Medina edging National Master Henry Roger Lopez in 62 moves of a Dutch Defense, and Lorenzo toppling NM Jasper Rom after 67 moves of a French Defense.

FM Austin Jacob Literatus and FM Jose Efren Bagamasbad drew their matches over FM Roel Abelgas and Joselito Cada, respectively, even as GM John Paul Gomez split the point with International Master Daniel Quizon in 24 moves of Sicilian Defense.

Michaela Concio was the lone casualty for Laguna in the rapid after yielding to Woman National Master Jerlyn Mae San Diego in 55 moves of a Sicilian Defense.

Prior to the match against Team Paralympic, Laguna squeaked past Singapore, 11-10.

San Juan shared the top spot with Laguna in the Northern Division with victories over Peng Cheng, 14.5-6.5, and Singapore, 11-10.

Team Paralympic, for its part, remained at the helm in the South Division despite the defeat with 8-1.
