'Sentimental journey?': 1Sambayan convenor sees Robredo running for president after Camarines Sur trip

A convenor of opposition coalition 1Sambayan considers the recent trip of Vice President Leni Robredo to her home province of Camarines Sur a “sentimental journey” toward her decision to run for president in the 2022 polls.

Bro. Armin Luistro, one of the 1Sambayan convenors, said he was sure Robredo would announce her presidential bid before October 8, the last day of filing of the Certificate of Candidacy (COC).

The vice president went to Camarines Sur last Thursday, September 30, so she may change her voter registration from Naga City to the municipality of Magarao.

This was the same day that 1Sambayan endorsed Robredo as its standard-bearer for the upcoming elections. She, however, has yet to decide on joining the presidential race.

She was also seen paying a visit to the life-size image of Sto. Entierro at Calabanga, Camarines Sur.

Luistro said this trip of Robredo bolstered his belief that she will gun for the presidency next year, otherwise she would have announced it in her home province.

“Palagay ko kung gagawa ka ng isang mahalagang desisyon sa buhay mo babalik at babalik ka sa iyong pinag-ugatan. (Para) Sa akin (I think if you’ll make an important decision in your life, you’ll go back to your roots. For me) it’s like a sentimental journey for her,” Luistro said in an interview on Teleradyo.

1Sambayan, composed of various pro-democracy organizations and progressive groups, are still awaiting for Robredo whether or not she will accept her nomination.

The coalition endorsed her for president despite her insistence to continue unity talks with other anti-administration personalities running in the 2022 polls.

If Robredo will announce her candidacy before Oct. 8, then that will not push former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, another 1Sambayan nominee, to run as president. The former senator said he will file his COC for president if Robredo doesn’t file hers by 12 noon of Oct. 8.

Announcing her intentions to run before Trillanes’ deadline will also give the opposition enough time to figure out who will be her running mate in the coming polls.

1Sambayan’s internal survey showed Trillanes a top choice for vice president.
