DOST-FNRI partners with UP-NIH for research on nutrition, aging

The Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) forged partnership with the University of the Philippines Manila-National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH) to pursue research on nutrition and aging.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said a ceremonial signing “for research collaboration nutrition and aging” was held on Oct.11.

“For the current updates of the research, the data collection simulation of anthropometry and functional status/physical performance has already been conducted together with post-simulation meeting,” he said.

The local government units (LGUs) in Tarlac, Davao, and Tacloban will be involved in the project.

“Pre-data collection activities have been conducted, as well such as finalization of questionnaires and coordination with the LGUs of Tarlac, Davao, and Tacloban,” the DOST chief said.

In August this year, De la Peña announced that the DOST-FNRI was expected to commence its research on the relations between body composition and quality of life in old age.

He said preparations were underway for the implementation of the DOST-FNRI's research on nutrition and aging.

He said the project aims to determine the association of body composition with the functional capacity and quality of life of older persons in selected regions in the country.

“Specifically, it will assess the body composition, functional capacity and quality of life of older persons; and determine the following: relationship of muscle mass and fat mass with functional capacity and quality of life; relationship of geographic and environmental variables with the nutritional status of senior citizens using geographic information system or GIS; and the energy cost of selected physical and occupational activities of older persons.”
