Team Ultimate CEO marvels at Blacklist Ultimate's 'unexpected' runs

Team Ultimate CEO Matt Gloria marveled at the success of his Call of Duty: Mobile team, now under the name of Blacklist International.Ultimate, in the 2021 CODM Philippine Championship and in the recently concluded 2021 CODM World Championship: Garena Qualifiers.

Blacklist Ultimate won the title in the PH championships, besting Omega Esports in the Grand Finals before finishing third in the Garena regional Qualifiers where it was pitted against the top teams in the Southeast Asia region.

The 18-year-old executive admitted that his team’s impressive run was unexpected, especially during the PH championship when Team Ultimate had to climb its way out of the lower bracket to set up a date against the unbeaten Omega Esports in the Finals.

Team Ultimate then overcame Omega’s twice to beat advantage to pull off a huge upset and claim the PH CODM title.

“To be honest, that run was really an unexpected run for the whole team and the management at the same time. We weren't aiming actually for the championship spot since given naman na NRX.Jeremiah 29:11 known as Smart Omega, they have been the Philippine champions the fast few seasons and it's a first time na may makatalo sa kanila sa team in the Philippine championship finals,” Gloria recalled.

“It was actually a really big thing for us already. That lower bracket became a lesson to the players and for the management, to be able to prepare more and mas maglabas pa ng gigil maglaro,” he added.

It was a deja vu of some sort for Blacklist Ultimate as the team had to endure a rough start in the Garena Qualifiers which offered a spot at the CODM World Championships.

The squad absorbed several sweeps in the group stage but managed to secure a spot in the quarterfinals when it pulled off another stunning upset against a strong team, this time, Thailand's Sharper Esports which topped the Group A standings.

“I guess it's similar to when we dropped to the lower bracket, it became another lesson for the players and for the management to really prepare for what's coming up next,” said Gloria.

Unfortunately, Blacklist bowed to Dunia Games Esports in a tight 3-2 score in the semifinals, dropping the Filipinos out of contention for the spot in the World Championships.

Blacklist was quick to redeem itself as it vented out its frustrations to the Group B leaders WDC.Freeslot. The Filipino prevailed with a sweet sweep of the Thais to finish third overall in the tournament.

Nonetheless, Gloria was thankful to their supporters especially to Blacklist International which made the Qualifiers run possible.

“We’re very thankful for them, especially that they've been helping us so much with the facility with the marketing of the team. It's really a big game changer for us too,” he said of Tier One Entertainment’s professional esports arm.
