Pia Wurtzbach brings Filipino fashion to South Africa through Mark Bumgarner's creations

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach dazzled South Africa with Filipino fashions made by designer Mark Bumgarner.

During her stay in the country for its national pageant, the Filipina beauty queen made sure that she has a piece, well, pieces, from home in her journey. In her suitcase were designs from Mark’s Couture Collection VIII. The collection, launched last May, presents a “story of hope, resilience, and love,” a joyful and optimistic view of fashion after a challenging year in the pandemic.

“Our atelier like many others has stepped back for over a year due to the radical changes brought upon by the pandemic,” the designer said. “Yet we met the arduous series of events head-on and rode the slow waves of the pandemic to reflect and slowly rebuild. This collection is a story of our resilience as a people and our never-ending desire to create. As we see a glimpse of a New Beginning, here is a collection to light up these dark times.”

Pia looked every bit of a regal queen during her trip. She made a case for floral style by donning the collection’s Look N°18 in a one-on-one moment with each of the Miss South Africa 2021 contestants. In another botanical number, the Filipino beauty queen savored the best of the country’s wine, wearing Look N°14. She also stunned everyone with Mark’s Look N°20, a bold off-the-shoulder dress with dramatic sleeves made of black velvet and metallic tweed. Capping her style fest was an emerald couture gown with romantic drapery, which she wore for the coronation night.
