AC Energy, Vietnamese partner push battery storage for solar projects

Ayala-led AC Energy Corporation (ACEN) and its Vietnamese firm-partner AMI Renewables will be piloting the installation of battery energy storage system (BESS), as a coupling technology that shall be integrated in their 50-megawatt solar farm project in Khanh Hoa province.

In a statement to the media, AC Energy indicated that the ‘pilot testing’ of the battery technology has been made possible through the US$2.962 million grant extended by the United States Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.

“AMI AC Renewables will integrate the 15 megawatt-hour/7.5MW Khanh Hoa energy storage project into its operating 50MW AMI Khanh Hoa solar farm, “ the Ayala firm has announced.

ACEN expounded that the battery storage installation “is expected to demonstrate the technical and economic capabilities of the energy storage technology, and showcase how it can help maximize the efficiency and reliability of renewable energy.”

According to Patrice Clausse, chief operating officer of AC Energy International, “energy storage is the key to unlock the potential of renewables and is a vital component of the energy transition.”

With this enabling technology, the Ayala firm executive emphasized that “we will aim to secure Vietnam’s renewable energy sources while helping the country achieve its sustainability goals.”

Vietnam is a key market in which the energy investment business unit of the Ayala group has been vigorously expanding its renewable energy ventures – primarily in solar and wind farm developments. But with the niggling intermittency of these RE resources, battery is aligned as the tailor-fitted technology response in addressing their on-and-off state of electricity generation.

For his part, Nguyen Nam Thang, chief executive officer of AMI AC Renewables, noted that the decision of the US Consulate General to entrust to their company that pioneering venture of BESS deployment in the Vietnamese energy market is an exhilarating achievement.

“Our solar plant in Khanh Hoa province is an ideal place to demonstrate how energy storage can help Vietnam reach its full renewable energy potential,” he stressed.

Marie C. Damour, chargé d’affaires ad interim of the US Consulate General, similarly stated that the US government is “pleased to support Vietnam’s efforts to expand renewable energy generation and reduce reliance on coal.”

The American government official added “this project aims to show how cutting-edge US energy storage technology can advance these goals, and catalyze Vietnam’s transition to a clean energy economy for a climate resilient future.”

The tie-up firm of AC Energy and AMI Renewables currently has 80MWp solar developments portfolio in Khanh Hoa and Dak Lak provinces; and they are also advancing the construction of their 252MW B&T wind farm in Quang Binh province.
