Senator Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao on Friday, Oct. 15, downplayed his expulsion from the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) by the faction of Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi as he continued to reject its legitimacy.

In a television interview, Pacquiao said Cusi and his colleagues were long expelled from the party before they moved to oust him.
"Hindi ko tinatanggap...dahil tinanggal ko na rin sila bago nila ako tanggalin. So mas nauna akong nagtanggal sa kanila. Mas nauna kaming nagtanggal sa kanila (I do not accept this explusion because I already expelled them before they removed me. I expelled them first. We expelled them first)," said Pacquiao, who is president of their own faction in the PDP-Laban, in an interview on ABS-CBN News Channel.
Cusi's group earlier approved a resolution expelling Pacquiao from the administration party after the latter filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) president under the Progressive Movement for the Devolution of Initiatives (PROMDI), and not PDP-Laban, last October 1.
Melvin Matibag, the faction's secretary-general, said Pacquiao violated the party constitution for doing so. Filing by a member of a COC under anothr political party is one of the grounds for automatic expulsion, he said.
Pacquiao, however, said on Friday that the PDP-Laban National Council, in a previous resolution, allowed him to use PROMDI as his political party since they entered into an alliance for the 2022 polls.
This group called this the "MP3 Alliance".
He echoes his ally Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel, who maintained that no violation was committed by using PROMDI as Pacquiao's party for next year's elections.
Both Pacquiao and Pimentel refused to recognize the legitimacy of the Cusi wing. In July, their faction issued a resolution removing Cusi, Matibag, and membership committee head Astravel Naik for their supposed disloyalty to party by showing allegiance to another political group.
They suspected that Cusi's group will eventually push for the presidential bid Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who leads the regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago.
But in a later gathering, the Cusi-led group voided the resolution from Pacquiao's camp.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) En Banc has started deliberating a petition on the rivalry of the two PDP-Laban factions.
