No replacement yet for retiring PNP Chief Eleazar, says Año

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año said Friday, Oct. 15, that he has not yet come up with the list of officers who would replace Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, who is set to retire early next month.

“I have not yet submitted my recommended list for the next chief PNP. I’ll submit the list on the last week of October,’’ Año said in an interview.

Año pointed out that the criteria for Eleazar’s successor will be “seniority, merit and service reputation.

In a news briefing on Oct 14, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque praised Eleazar for his exemplary performance and wished that he could be chief PNP "for life."

Eleazar will reach the mandatory retirement age of 56 for uniformed men on November 13.

When pressed on the possibility of Eleazar’s extension, Año stressed that it would depend on the decision of the Commander-in-Chief, President Duterte.

It can be recalled that the President extended the tenure of then PNP Chief and now presidential candidate Senator Ronald “Bato’’ dela Rosa.

“It depends of course on the President. That is within his authority,’’ he added.

However, Año remained mum on the list when asked who among the senior police officers are the frontrunners to be the next chief PNP.

Eleazar is the country’s 26th PNP Chief. He is a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) "Hinirang" Class of 1987 and he assumed his post on May 8, 2021 -- replacing now retired general and current Office of the President Undersecretary Debold Sinas.
