DOST conducts training on breadfruit propagation in Davao Oriental

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has continued promoting breadfruit as an ideal emergency food source.

The DOST-XI through its Provincial Science and Technology Center in Davao Oriental (PSTC DO) conducted training on breadfruit propagation and seedling distribution on Oct. 7 2021 at the Municipal Hall, Tarragona, Davao Oriental.

“DOST-XI continues to lead the way in battling the adverse effects of climate change and strengthening the disaster preparedness efforts of the people in Davao Region by relying on the power of science, technology, and innovation.”

Benefitting from the training are personnel from the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO), the Municipal Mayor’s Office and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources (MENRO) of Tarragona Davao Oriental.

"Breadfruit is a resilient crop and bears fruit that is normally consumed for subsistence in many Pacific countries. It was found to be a good source of food especially during natural calamities since it is easily accessible.”

During the activity, Dino M. Gulane, trainer from the Green Landscape Care and Maintenance Services, said breadfruit is rich in carbohydrates and a good source of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

He shared several techniques of cloning for more efficient propagation such as marcotting, grafting, and root cutting.

The DOST-XI also reported the distribution of 50 breadfruit seedlings to LGU Tarragona as part of the interventions under the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Program in the municipality of Tarragona, Davao Oriental

"This activity caters to the need of enhancing Disaster Risk Reduction and Management initiatives of the community which is one of the entry points of the CEST Program.”
