12 children with comorbidities vaccinated against COVID-19 at PGH

No adverse events following immunization (AEFI) has been reported among children with comorbidities who were vaccinated at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) as the government launched the pediatric vaccination on Friday, Oct. 15.

In a radio interview, PGH Spokesperson Dr. Jonas Del Rosario said that 12 pediatric patients with comorbidities aged 12 to 17 participated in the ceremonial launch of the vaccination among children at their hospital.

"So far, so good. Meron kaming (We have a) system in place," said Del Rosario.

"Napansin ko talagang maingat ngayon. Medyo deliberately mabagal siguro para talagang maalis namin ang pangamba ng mga magulang (We are really being careful now. Quite deliberately in a slow manner so we can really remove the apprehension of parents)," he added.

Del Rosario said that some of the children have a fear of injections.

“Parang kinakabahan pa din sa tusok yung mga bata... pero nandun ang mga magulang to assure them (The children seem nervous about the injection ... but the parents are there to assure them),” he said.

The PGH is one of the eight Metro Manila hospitals that were selected for the pilot implementation of vaccination of minors with comorbidities.

The other hospitals were Philippine Children's Medical Center, National Children's Hospital, Philippine Heart Center, Pasig City Children's Hospital, Fe Del Mundo Medical Center, St. Luke's Medical Center (Bonifacio Global City), and Makati Medical Center.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) has yet to provide details on how many children with comorbidities received their first dose during the first day of the vaccination rollout for minors.

“Magbibigay po tayo ng karagdagang impormasyon at iba pa pong documentations in the coming days para sa inyong lahat (We will provide more information and other documentations in the coming days for all of you)...We still do not have that data right now,” said DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

“Maybe after one week, we can give you a rundown of how many children were vaccinated based on the number of patients that we have in that specific hospital,” she added.

Also, Vergeire said that they do not yet have an exact number of children with comorbidities who are eligible for the initial phase of the vaccination.

“What we are relying on right now would be the pool of patients of the pediatricians in the identified hospitals,” she said.
