PhilHealth urged by Trillanes to settle hospital claims in General Santos City

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Wednesday, October 12, called on the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) to pay the claims of private hospitals for its services in General Santos City.

Trillanes, who is seeking a Senate comeback in the 2022 polls, pressed the need for PhilHealth to settle the payment amounting to P835.5 million.

“I am calling on PhilHealth to release the P835.5M payment due to General Santos City hospitals. They are having difficulty in sustaining their operations due to this backlog,” he said in a Facebook post.

The former senator attached a screenshot of the official statement dated Oct. 6 and signed by top officials of eight private hospitals in General Santos City.

These hospitals are Auguis Clinic and Hospital, GenSan Medical Center, Ro Diagan Cooperative Hospital, Socsargen County Hospital, and General Santos Doctors Hospital.

Also included are Mindanao Medical Center Inc., Sarangani Bay Specialists Medical Center Inc., and St. Elizabeth Hospital Inc.

The statement said the amount owed by the state-owned health insurance firm put a “strain on day-to-day operations amidst this community’s continuing need for healthcare.”

“Mounting receivables from PHIC coupled by increased operational costs brought about by COVID response have dealt a one-two punch on this city’s private hospitals even as they take up the brunt of caring for our sick,” the hospital officials said.

“The pandemic response has entailed unforseen expenses to retrofit hospitals with the necessary structures, barriers, and procure equipment recommended for care of COVID-19 patients,” they added.

Last September during a House hearing, PhilHealth pointed to the issues of paperwork that have caused delays in granting payment to hospital claims.
