Comelec to aspirants: contributions from foreigners, foreign corporations prohibited

Those running in the May 2022 polls better be careful in accepting campaign donations.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said contributions from foreigners and foreign corporations are prohibited.

"Foreigners cannot contribute to any Filipino candidate," Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said on Twitter.

The poll official issued the statement in reaction to the launch of the crowdfunding page for the presidential bid of Vice President Leni Robredo.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez echoed what Guanzon said.

"Commissioner Guanzon is correct. Contributions from foreigners and foreign corporations are prohibited," he said.

"Pinapalalahanan natin ang mga kandidato na mag-ingat sa pag tanggap ng mga donations (We are reminding candidates to be careful in receiving their donations)," Jimenez added.

"Kailangan i-report lahat yan (all contributions should be reported), and if they accept donations from prohibited donors, they could be facing an electoral offense charge which could result in disqualification," he said.

Based on the Omnibus Election Code, no contribution for purposes of partisan political activity shall be made directly or indirectly by foreigners and foreign corporations, among others.

Violation of the said prohibition is tantamount to an election offense, which carries the penalty of one to six years of imprisonment, disqualification to hold public office, and removal of the right of suffrage.
