'Puro na lang sa lalaki'; Netizens react to law vs abusive, drunkard, philandering husbands

Netizens were quick to react to the Supreme Court’s (SC) recent warning to abusive, drunkard, and philandering husbands.

The SC had earlier said that husbands, who will commit these types of violations could be liable for a jail term of a maximum of eight years, and/or, be fined at least P100,000.

"How about abusive wives and neglectful mothers? Rare they are, but they are not unheard. Or any women who will abuse the gender card for their advantage?," one of the users commented.

"Bakit na lang lagi sa lalake Ina apply Ang batas,, pano ang mga babaeng nagloko at abusado ,, nasasaktan din kami (Why do law always apply to men, how about those women who also cheated and abusive, we are also hurt)," another user said.

Another user also said the law was "somehow bias". "It's more on men... What about the women? Are there any laws that apply to women who neglect their responsibility in the family?"

"While it is true that there are husbands/partners like this, it is also true that overseas husbands/hardworking husbands send money for their families in the Philippines thinking kids have been sent to  schools, houses have been improved, savings increased etc. however wives have overspent remittances on providing for the needs of their relatives or spending on unnecessary things. I'm not against it, but somehow our laws favors Feminism rather than equal rights for all," another user commented.

"Puro nalang sa lalake anap mali p*cha na yan un babaeng manginginum pabaya at maldita k*ng in*ng y*n alang parusa g*g*ng mga batas yan," another user said.

The warning was, in effect, issued by the SC in its decision that affirmed the conviction of a husband by the trial court and the Court of Appeals (CA) for violation of the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act under Republic Act No. 9262.

According to the decision released by the SC’s public information office (PIO), the wife testified that in their 23 years of marriage, the petitioner (husband) had a habit of getting drunk and womanizing.
