PH among top ASEAN countries with most active COVID-19 cases - WHO data


The Philippines is among the top Southeast Asian countries with most number of active coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases and taking the 20th spot worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In a recorded televised public briefing which was aired just minutes before midnight, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III reported this latest development citing the WHO world rankings of countries based on data as of October 10.

Active cases

The Philippines ranked third among member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with regards to the number of active COVID-19 cases, with 90,927 active cases.

Malaysia, which had 116,596 active cases, was ranked first, closely followed by Thailand with 110,880 active cases.

Compared to nations worldwide, the country took the 20th spot, while the United States of America topping the list having 9,805,835 active cases followed by the United Kingdom with 1,365,107 cases.

Case fatality rate

Based on the rankings, the Philippines ranked fifth among ASEAN countries when it comes to COVID-19 case fatality rate at 1.48 percent.

Myanmar took the top spot with 3.80 percent, followed by Indonesia with 3.37 percent, then Vietnam with 2.45 percent, and Cambodia with 2.14 percent.

Globally, the country was at 113th spot with regards to the case fatality rate for COVID-19.

Deaths per population

The country also ranked third among ASEAN countries when it comes to COVID-19 deaths per population, with 356 deaths per one million individuals.

Malaysia took the top spot with 831 deaths per one million individuals followed by Indonesia with 515 deaths per one million population.

Globally, the Philippines got the 122nd spot for COVID-19 deaths per one million population.

The top 5 countries for COVID-19 deaths per population are Peru, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Bulgaria.

Cases per population

Meanwhile, the Philippines also ranked third among ASEAN countries with 23,929 cases per one million population, closely following Thailand in the second spot with 24,33 cases

Malaysia was ranked first among ASEAN countries with 71,126 cases.

In comparison to countries worldwide, the country took the 133rd spot.

Topping the list was Seychelles with 218,297 cases, then Montenegro with 215,385 cases per one million population.
