'Maring'-enhanced 'habagat' affects Metro Manila, S. Luzon, W. Visayas

The southwest monsoon or "habagat" enhanced by severe tropical storm "Maring" (international name "Kompasu") may bring rains over Metro Manila, Southern Luzon, and Western Visayas in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

In its 11 a.m. weather advisory, PAGASA said moderate to heavy monsoon rains may prevail over Occidental Mindoro and Palawan.

Meanwhile, light to moderate with at times heavy rains may be felt in Metro Manila, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Antique, Aklan, Negros Occidental, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, and Romblon.

"Under these conditions, flash flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA said.

"PAGASA regional services divisions may issue local rainfall advisories and heavy rainfall warnings while the Hydrometeorology Division and River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning centers may issue general flood advisories and basin flood bulletins as appropriate," it added.

It advised the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned to take appropriate actions and continue monitoring official updates regarding severe tropical storm Maring and the southwest monsoon.
