LTFRB to study fare hike requests amid increasing fuel prices

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said it will review the fare hike petitions to be submitted by transport groups amid the rise in fuel costs as holiday season nears.

"Kung sakaling mareceive ng aming opisina ang request for fare adjustment, paag-aaralan po ito ng ating Board (Once we receive the request for fare adjustment, the Board will review it)," LTFRB Executive Director Joel Bolano said during the Laging Handa virtual briefing on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

However, Bolano said the Board's decision for a fare adjustment should balance the welfare of the drivers and commuters, especially with the ongoing health crisis.

"Nasa pandemic pa tayo. Naintindihan po natin na mataas ang fuel prices pero tinitignan din natin yung capacity ng mga pasahero at commuters sa ganitong sitwasyon (We are still in a pandemic. We understand that fuel prices are high but we are also looking at the capacity of the riding public in this situation)," he added.

Transport groups have been pushing for an increase in fare rates as many public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators are still reeling hard from financial woes triggered by the pandemic.

Pasang Masda President Obet Martin said they will be filing a request for a P3 fare increase on the current P9 minimum fare on public utility jeepney due to the steady rise in fuel costs.

While the LTFRB will still study the petition, Bolano said the possible minimum fare hike for public transport would be around P1.26 based on its computation.

"Kung pagbabasehan yung formula sa memorandum circular na ginagamit batay sa mga increases ng petrolyo, based sa aming computation, hindi lalampas sa P1.26 more or less (In our computation based on the formula and the fuel price increases, will not exceed P1.26)," the transport official explained.

Bolano also urged commuters to report unauthorized fare increases to the LTFRB.

Meanwhile, Bolano said the agency will continue implementing its programs for frontliners in the transport sector which was among the hardest hit by the pandemic.

These include the service contracting program where the government pays PUV operators and drivers to provide free rides for essential passengers.
