Filipinos' outlook on the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has worsened as the proportion of those who fear the "worst is yet to come" has surged to a record-high in the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey results released on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

The non-commissioned survey conducted from Sept. 12 to 16 with 1,200 respondents found that 60 percent of Filipinos think that the worst of the pandemic is yet to come.

The result surpassed the previous worst of 57 percent in July 2020, SWS said in a statement.

"Conversely, those saying 'the worst is behind us' fell from 59 percent in June 2021 to 38 percent in September 2021. This is the lowest since the record-low 35 percent in July 2020" it added.

Catching COVID-19 worries 91% of Filipinos

During the same survey period, SWS found 91 percent of adult Filipinos worried (76 percent a great deal worried, 15 percent somewhat worried) and 9 percent a little/not worried (4 percent a little worried, 5 percent not worried) that anyone in their immediate family might catch COVID-19.

The pollster pointed out that the latest percentage of those worried about catching COVID-19 is four points above the 87 percent in June 2021 and tied the record-high level reached in November 2020.

From June 2021 to September 2021, SWS said that the outlook on the COVID-19 crisis worsened both among those worried and those not worried about catching COVID-19.

The percentage of those fearing the worst is yet to come rose from 41 percent in June 2021 to 62 percent in September 2021 among those a great deal/somewhat worried about catching the virus.

It also rose from 27 percent to 44 percent among those a little/not worried about catching COVID-19.

"The percentage of those fearing 'the worst is yet to come' with the COVID-19 crisis is always higher among those worried about catching COVID-19 than those not worried," SWS said.

'The worst is yet to come' rose in all areas, especially in Luzon

The survey found that the percentage of those fearing the worst is yet to come with the COVID-19 crisis is highest in Balance Luzon (65 percent), followed by the Visayas (62 percent), Metro Manila (61 percent), and Mindanao (49 percent).

"Compared to June 2021, those fearing 'the worst is yet to come' rose from 36 percent in Balance Luzon, 45 percent in the Visayas, 30 percent in Metro Manila, and 46 percent in Mindanao," SWS said.

"On the other hand, those saying 'the worst is behind us' are highest in Mindanao (49 percent), followed by Metro Manila (37 percent), the Visayas (36 percent), and Balance Luzon (34 percent)," it added.

SWS also noted that compared to June 2021, those saying the worst is behind us fell from 53 percent in Mindanao, 69 percent in Metro Manila, 53 percent in the Visayas, and 62 percent in Balance Luzon.

Worry about catching COVID-19 rose in all areas

The percentage of those a great deal/somewhat worried about catching COVID-19 is highest in the Visayas (95 percent), followed by Mindanao (94 percent), Metro Manila (91 percent), and Balance Luzon (88 percent).

Compared to June 2021, worry about catching COVID-19 rose from 90 percent in the Visayas, 90 percent in Mindanao, 85 percent in Metro Manila, and 85 percent in Balance Luzon.
