Vaccine rollout for children to start for minors aged 15-17

The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society of the Philippines (PIDSP) said Monday, Oct. 11, said the pilot pediatric vaccination in the country will be done through phases.

In a public briefing, Dr. Drew Camposano of PIDSP said the inoculation of 15 to 17 years old will be done first, followed by the 12 to 14 years group.

"Kailangan pong phased po muna para maging handa tayo pag malawakan na yung bakunahan, naaral natin kung ano yung kailangan nating paghandaan pag marami na yung mga babakunahan (We need to do it by phase first so we can be ready once we start vaccinating more children, we need to prepare first)," Camposano noted.

"Syempre , yung mga ibang lugar hindi pa nakakaabot yung ng 50 percent above yung senior citizens nila na nababakunahan. Uunahain muna yung mga lugar na mataas na yung coverage ng senior citizen (We need to do it by phase because there are areas who have not yet vaccinated 50 percent of their senior citizens. We will prioritize areas with high senior citizen vaccination coverage)," he added.

Children who have underlying medical conditions will also be prioritized in the vaccination program.

These health conditions, according to the Department of Health, are medical complexity, genetic conditions, neurologic conditions, metabolic/endocrine, cardiovascular disease, obesity, HIV infection, tuberculosis, chronic respiratory disease, renal disorders, and hepatobiliary.

Camposano said a medical certificate is needed before the minor will be vaccinated.

Eight hospitals in Metro Manila will offer vaccinations for minors aged 15-17 and children with comorbidities, namely, National Children's Hospital, Philippine Heart Center, Pasig City Children's Hospital, Fe Del Mundo Medical Center, Philippine General Hospital, Makati Medical Center, St. Luke's Medical Center in Taguig City, and Philippine Children's Medical Center.

The pediatric age-group vaccination is set to begin on Oct. 15.
