Pokwang shares advice on building strong family relationships

The GMA fantasy program “Daig Kayo ng Lola ko: It’s Not You, It’s Me” is close to the heart of the audience, particularly now that the pandemic brought all families together staying at home.
In the latest episode of the show, Pokwang is playing Sunshine, a mother of two, and argues relentlessly with her husband Homer, played by Tonton Gutierrez.
On the role of Sunshine, Pokwang has acted out numerous and various motherly roles, but Pokwang is yet to play a mother whose life is above average.
“I usually play as an impoverished and understanding mother, but for “Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko,” I am living preppy. But the contrast is that I am no longer understanding. Sunshine is short-tempered and clamorous,” states Pokwang during a Zoom conference last Oct. 1.
She also described how Filipinos are emotional and can be easily strayed through dramatic acting compared to comedic acts where finding the right timing and atmosphere to deliver the lines is essential.
Pokwang shared that through “70 percent of comedy and 30 percent of comedy” treatment of the story, they would be able to convey such a soul-stirring topic in “Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko: It's Not You, It’s Me."
“We have to manifest patience and stick up for our family members. As parents, think rationally about the outcomes your decision may acquire and its effect on your children.” Pokwang says. “I definitely relate to the setting. I remember unnecessary clashing with Papang (Pokwang’s real-life husband, William Lee O’Brian) when it should be balanced like a battery if someone is feeling down, the latter should be the positive charge.”

“Communication is key,” the comedienne adds.
Pokwang advises: “In the middle of the argument, I would realize what I just did was unfounded and unprovoked, and if it hits you, do not be afraid of admitting your intemperance.”
Being a mother, Pokwang also felt slightly jittered at first to come work as an actress again and attend tapings. The concern of posing as a threat to the health of her family members, especially her baby daughter, Malia was apparent, but the actress had to brush it off.
“Bills are piling up, and it is impractical for me to be stayed consumed by my fears. Once I came back, it flushed my worries away. The set was safe, and the staff was diligent to all health protocols," she said in the interview.
Pokwang touched on the topic of transferring networks. She sends out a message for artists who are contemplating moving networks: “We all know how important networking is, so do not burn bridges. The industry is at a small scale where everybody knows everybody.”
As a Kapuso for only three months, Pokwang’s journey has been blossoming. Booking projects there and then, Pokwang expresses her gratitude to GMA for assigning her monumental roles, the actress called it an “answered prayer.” Pokwang also declares her desire to host her own family-oriented talk show.
“Daig Kayo ng Lola ko: It’s Not You, It’s Me” started airing last Oct. 3. It will run for four Sundays, Oct. 3, Oct. 10, Oct. 17, and Oct. 24 on the GMA channel after “24 Oras Weekend.” (Kirsten Cabuenos)
