PH Red Cross warns public vs 'smishing' scams

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has issued a warning against a malicious text message from a certain individual claiming to be as a medical personnel from the “International Red Cross.”

In an advisory, the humanitarian organization said that there is no such organization as the International Red Cross.

“Be wary. This is a smishing scam,” the PRC said.

“Smishing texts are social-engineering scams that aim to manipulate the people into turning over sensitive data such as banking details. If you have received one, do not entertain the text,” it added.

It noted that there is only the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and International Committee of the Red Cross, of which the PRC is a member.

These organizations call themselves IFRC and ICRC, and not International Red Cross.

“PRC’s legal team is currently investigating the incident and will take legal action to the full extent of the law against these offenders,” the PRC said.
