Frank sets women's PH record for short program in Finland tilt

Filipino-American Sofia Frank set a new Philippine record for garnering the highest short program score for a Filipina skater in an International Skating Union-sanctioned competition in the 2021 Finlandia Trophy Saturday, Oct. 9. at the Espoo Metro Arena in Finland.

The Philippine Skating Union recognized Frank's achievements after her short program run, placing 18th place so far out of 27 skaters with 53.30 points.

"Sofia Frank just registered the highest short program score a Filipina has performed in an ISU international competition!" wrote PHSU on its Facebook page. "Congratulations on a great performance tonight in the Finlandia Trophy!"

Frank, who just turned 16 on Wednesday, Oct. 6, highlighted the performance with her double axel attempt despite jump landing on the quarter as well as her triple lutz and triple toe loop combination.

She is competing in the free skate program at press time.

Russian skaters Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Alena Kostornaia, and Kamila Valieva led the rankings with 81.53, 78.61, and 74.93 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, junior skater Skye Patenia finished 34th in a field of 38 skaters in the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Cup of Austria at the Linz AG Eisarena in Linz, Austria the same day.

It marked Patenia's first appearance in the ISU Junior Grand Prix as she registered a total of 76.51 while Russian skater Sofia Muravieva ruled the competition with 211.81 points, followed by Isabeau Levito of the United States with 208.31 points and Anastasia Zinina of Russia with 190.66.
