371 Art Space gathers Raul Isidro, Patrick Esmao, Aner Sebastian, Mario de Rivera, and Norberto Carating in ManilArt 2021 show
The unreality of memories

Adaptation, change, transformation and mutability are the primary themes that characterize the works for “The Unreality of Memories.” These issues manifest themselves in different ways, and for Raul Isidro, Norberto Carating, Mario de Rivera, Aner Sebastian, and Patrick Esmao, it is through the combination of disparate elements, whether the forms are abstract or representational, there is always a sense of alteration or development into something new.

Isidro, Carating, de Rivera, Sebastian, and Esmao have always been intrigued by memory and what remains in the mind’s eye. Each artist’s work reflects scenes from travels near and far. All are equally interested in the expressive and passionate response to the color and pattern of the landscape, experience, or image—the fluid space of memory, influenced by time and place, forms the foundation of content for their works. The artists merge aspects of experience and observations with imagined and remembered sensations to create non-objective work that reflects life and memory.

The paintings employ a very systematic approach, and in some ways meditative, mixing palettes, masking shapes, and applying paint. The intersecting elements convey a paradox—one of a carefully constructed accident—simultaneously intentional and random. The syntheses of these different visual languages continually lead to new and unexpected outcomes.

The participating artists’ works for “The Unreality of Memories” reflect on abstract expressionism and draws on the energy around each artist. Each individual’s process is organic and spontaneous, as the art itself comes alive with color and movement. The works consist of elements and images striving to represent emotion and story while portraying abandon, struggles, and celebration of victories. —Grace Ng
