MMDA's Garcia to resign from post, announces political plans

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) General Manager Jojo Garcia will step down from his post as he announced Friday, October 1, that he will run as a congressman in San Mateo, Rizal.

"I just want this to be formal, magbibitiw na po ako bilang general manager ng MMDA effective Oct. 4 dahil may intensyong akong tumakbo bilang kauna-unahang mambabatas ng ikatlong distrito ng Rizal, ang San Mateo (I will resign as a general manager of the MMDA effective Oct. 4 because I have an intention to run as the first-ever congressman of the third district of Rizal, in San Mateo)," Garcia said in a virtual presser.

Garcia said he is planning to file his candidacy on Oct. 5.

Prior to his resignation, Garcia said he already talked to Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea about his plan two weeks ago and to MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos about three months ago.

He also disclosed that the agency has yet to name an official who will take the position that he would vacate.

"I don't want to preempt it but of course may mga irerekomenda tayo na tingin natin mas makakatulong sa ahensya... Mayroon nang inirerekomenda at ang masusunod naman diyan ang Office of the President pa rin dahil sila ang nagbibigay ng appointment (There are already recommendations and it will be up to the Office of the President)," Garcia said.

Garcia further said that he is banking on his five-year experience in the MMDA for a successful congressional bid as he aims to improve San Mateo's infrastructure state if he wins.

"Alam naman po natin ang San Mateo, isang hakbang lang Quezon City na, isang hakbang lang Marikina na pero noong makita ko, malaking pwedeng maging improvement pa sa imprastraktura. Kaya nanghihinayang ako at hopefully 'yong aking natutunan ng halos limang taon ay mai-apply natin dito (We know that San Mateo is just one step from Quezon City and Marikina but I saw that there is a huge need to improve its infrastructures. Hopefully, I can apply my experiences in the MMDA in the last five years)," he added.
